The initial conference presenting the EU project “EXPPAND – Introduction of a New Program of Experimental Pharmacology and Pathology and Organization of Summer School Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics” was held at the School of Medicine University of Zagreb. The project will be implemented from 2018 to 2021.
(In Zagreb, January 25, 2019) – The EXPPAND project has been developed with the aim of improving the quality of higher education in the Republic of Croatia, in particular, increasing competitiveness and facilitating student employment in the future. For the purpose of internationalization of studies and student mobility within higher education, the School of Medicine University of Zagreb with partners – Croatian Medical Association, School of Dental Medicine, Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology, Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry, University of Zagreb, has launched the EXPPAND project entirely funded by the European Social Fund.
The starting point for such a project is a small number of studies in foreign languages in the Republic of Croatia (12/1350) and poor mobility, which according to EUROSTAT data for graduate students in 2015 was 0.5%, while the EU average for the year 2015 was 13.9%. The national target for the Republic of Croatia is to achieve at least 10% for outgoing and 5% for inbound mobility by 2025. Furthermore, in accordance with the Croatian Strategy for Education, Science and Technology, it is necessary to develop new educational programs in English. The EXPPAND project offers its contribution to solving these problems through the development and implementation of two new programs in English: 1st elective course “Experimental Pharmacology and Pathology” and 2nd Summer School “Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics”. Project Manager Prof. Davor Ježek pointed out that these innovative and modern programs in English created the preconditions for increasing the mobility of students and the internationalization of the School of Medicine University of Zagreb, and in the long run for easier integration of graduates into the labor market in and outside the Republic of Croatia. The Vice-Dean for International Cooperation added that the value of the project is 1.756.562,71 HRK which enables the implementation of numerous planned activities over the three years of the project, which are in line with European and national strategies. The Vice-Dean believes that by improving the knowledge and skills of the teaching and non-teaching staff, equipping the faculty with the necessary didactic resources and developing teaching materials in English and e-learning within this project will contribute to increasing the incoming and outgoing mobility of students.
Following the development of both programs and accreditation in the first year of the project, the programs will be implemented on two occasions from 2019 to 2021. Members of the project team from four faculties of Zagreb and renowned local and international experts will participate in the project implementation. The quality of the program, e-materials and modern teaching methods will provide new knowledge and skills for 160 students. In addition, it will contribute to the empowerment of teaching and non-teaching staff through visits to top international conferences, the improvement of English language skills and the exchange of knowledge with international lecturers.
Thanks to the EXPPAND project, the society will in the future benefit from the services of young doctors, nutritionists, dentists, veterinarians, pharmacists and biochemists who have gained knowledge through new programs. The synergistic action of the School of Medicine University of Zagreb and partners will ensure long-term positive effects through the internationalization and translation of science to all target groups – students, teaching and non-teaching staff, and contribute to local and global community growth and progress.
